The Chair of the Jean Julliard Prize committee has been involved in a high-level review of the full portfolio of ISBT awards and prizes, due to make recommendations to the ISBT Board in June 2025. The goal of this subgroup of the Executive Committee is to evaluate whether the current portfolio of awards adequately represents all ISBT members, balancing science and clinical fields in transfusion medicine, and ensuring gender and geographic equity.
Activities during the period
Decisions were made by March 31, 2024, on the following awards and prizes to be presented in Barcelona in June 2024.
Jean Juilliard Prize
The Jean Juilliard Prize will be next awarded in 2026.
Vox Sanguinis Best Paper Prize

Higinio Estrada winner of the 2023 Vox Sanguinis Best Paper Prize
This prize is awarded each year for the best original paper published in Vox Sanguinis in the previous calendar year. This years’ review was undertaken by Michael Busch, Erica Wood, Thierry Burnouf and Faten Moftah, based on careful review and independent scoring of five nominated papers selected by the Vox Sanguinis section editors. The value of the prize is €5,000.
During this reporting period, the 2023 prize was awarded to Higinio Estrada in Barcelona in June 2024, and the committee reviewed candidate papers for the 2024 prize.
For 2024 the prize is awarded to Dr. Phillipe Vandekerckhove, on behalf of all authors, for the manuscript: Mortier A, Khoudary J, van Dooslaer de Ten Ryen S, Lannoy C, Benoit N, Antoine N, Copine S, Van Remoortel H, Vandekerckhove P, Compernolle V, Deldicque L. Effects of plasmapheresis frequency on health status and exercise performance in men: a randomized controlled trial. Vox Sang 2024;119: 134‐43.
The prize will be presented at the 35th Regional Congress of the ISBT in Milan in June 2025.
The Chair thanks the current committee members for their contributions during 2024-25, and acknowledges the work of the previous Chair, Professor Erica Wood (Australia), and previous members, for their service to ISBT.
