The Platelet Immunology Working Party (PIWP) currently has 31 lab members representing 19 countries. One lab in Japan was voted in as new member in 2024.
Meetings and Teleconferences
The PIWP conducted its Business Meeting June 17, 2023 at the 33rd Regional ISBT Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden. The agenda included, finalized plans for the 22nd International Platelet Immunology Workshop lead by Nuria Nogues (Spain), proposed creation of a Zoom Discussion Group for difficult antibody cases, presentation by Brian Curtis and John Semple (Sweden) on autoantibody testing in ITP, need for PIWP Co-chair and secretary, volunteers to serve as Education Coordinators.
Activities during the period
22nd PIWP International Workshop samples were shipped January 2024 by the organizing committee: Nuria Nogues, Nurul Munira Yahya (Malaysia), and Brian Curtis (USA). Samples consisted of 3 sera for HPA antibody detection and 3 DNA for HPA genotyping. Monoclonal antibodies and sera were also shipped for an exercise to study detection of CD36 antibodies on platelets. CD36 samples were kindly provided by Wenjie Xia (China) and Brian Curtis. Funding for the workshop was requested by the Chair and kindly approved by ISBT. Members of the PIWP prepared a series of In Focus articles “Platelet Immunology Working Party – Revealing the secrets of anti-platelet antibodies” published in Transfusion Today 2024;Issue 138.
It included 4 articles written by Brian Curtis, Nuria Nogues, Nurul Yahaya, John Semple, Leendert Porcelijn (Netherlands), Nelson Tsuno (Japan), Lucie Richard (Canada), Gunalp Uzun, Uli Sachs (Germany), Wenjie Xia, Lilach Bonstein, Gerald Bertrand (France), Gail Pahn (Australia), Mathieu Roussy (Canada), William Lemieux (Canada). Lilach Bonstein prepared and submitted a symposium, “Platelet Immunobiology - A focus on Platelet Immunology on behalf of the PIWP that was accepted for presentation at the 38th International ISBT Congress, Barcelona, Spain, June 26, 2024.
