Practice Changing Updates in Hematology
The "Practice Changing Updates in Hematology Conference" was held in Islamabad, Pakistan from the 17th to the 19th of August 2023.
The National Institute of Blood & Marrow Transplant Institute programme, involved updates from the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT), the American Society of Hematology (ASH) 2022, European Hematology Association (EHA) 2023 and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023. The scientific program offered a selection of the latest advances in haematology and transfusion medicine, and cutting-edge educational sessions were presented by world medical experts. It also provided a unique opportunity to share local data, real world experiences and solutions on challenges being experienced by developing countries.
The ISBT transfusion session was held on Friday, 18th of August, 2023 . The educational objectives of the session were as follows;
1. To discuss challenges of safe and effective blood transfusion in developing countries
2. Prevention of transfusion transmitted infections
3. Learning about transfusion support in hematopoietic stem cell transplant
This hybrid event was attended by more than 200 in person and 754 online participants in total from North and South America, Europe, U.A.E and Asia Pacific. Dr Mohsin Qureshi, Surgeon General of Pakistan Army, chaired the event, and the keynote speaker was Dr. Muhammad Saif, Consultant Hematologist Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, UK who presented on the Transfusion support on Hematopoietic stem cell transplant.
Dr. Nuzhat Mushahid, Professor & Director P-First Solutions Blood Center, from Pakistan gave a talk on the Access to safe and effective blood transfusions including blood component therapy. The third talk was on the Prevention of transfusion transmitted infections by Dr Saba Jamal from Indus Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan.
After the talks a panel discussion session was carried out which was moderated by Dr Faiza Noor from University of North Midlands and Dr Raheel Iftikhar from NIBMT, Pakistan with 5 panelists who are namely Dr Ayesha Junaid (Isb, Pakistan), Dr Muhammad Saif (Manchester, UK),Dr Nuzhat Mushahid (Isb, Pakistan), Dr Saba Jamal (Khi, Pakistan) and Dr. Shahtaj Khan (Psw, Pakistan).
