The 2024 Guideline on Use of Intravenous Albumin From the International Collaboration for Transfusion Medicine Guidelines (ICTMG)

Date: 17 July 2024

Speaker: Sheharyar Raza

Moderator: Jeannie Callum

Available for: ISBT members

Aim of the webinar

1. To review appraisal of existing evidence used to derive the 2024 ICTMG intravenous albumin guidelines. 2. To review ICTMG recommendations for the use of intravenous albumin

Level of education required

1 - fundamental knowledge

What prior knowledge is required?

It is recommended attendees read the guideline: https://www.ictmg.org/albumin

Target audience

Blood bankers, scientists, transfusion practitioners, managers

“Often when a patient is immediately post-op, they are trying to get them to a ward bed rather than transferring them to a higher acuity unit or critical care. And so they give the patiens some albumin to reduce the costs... Jeannie Callum”

Rh immune globulin immunoprophylaxis after RhD-positive red cell exposure in RhD-negative patients via transfusion: A survey of practice

Date: 21 May 2024

Speaker: Wen Lu

Moderator: Nour Almozain

Available for: ISBT members

Aim of the webinar

To highlight the practice of using RhIG immunoprophylaxis for RhD-negative patients who receive RhD-positive blood products.

Level of education required

Intermediate to advanced

What prior knowledge is required?

Participants are encouraged to read Rh immune globulin immunoprophylaxis after RhD-positive red cell exposure in RhD-negative patients via transfusion: A survey of practices

Target audience

Blood bankers, scientists, transfusion practitioners, managers

“Most institutions do not have well-defined written safety parameters around high dose RHIG administration and decisions are commonly made on a case by case basis. Wen Lu”

Hemostatic Challenges in Children on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Date: 30 May 2024

Speakers: Marianne Nellis, Oliver Karam

Moderator: Richard Gammon, Ruchika Goel

Available for: ISBT members

Aim of the Webinar

This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges associated with maintaining hemostasis in critically ill children on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). We delved into the critical balance between preventing excessive bleeding and avoiding dangerous clotting. Additionally, we explored a range of strategies for anticoagulation and transfusions, examining how these approaches can be tailored to effectively mitigate risks and improve patient outcomes in this vulnerable population.

Level of education required (1-5)

2 to 5 (2 - Novice (limited experience), 3 - intermediate (practical application), 4 - Advanced (applied theory), 5 - Expert (recognized authority)

What prior knowledge is required?

The attendees should consider reading the following articles:

  • Epidemiology of Hemostatic Transfusions in Children Supported by Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
  • Anticoagulation and hemostasis on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • Transfusion management for children supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • Anti-Xa versus time-guided anticoagulation strategies in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Target audience

Transfusion practitioners, blood bankers, experts in anticoagulation

“We started a pilot trial randomizing children to either platelet threshold of 50 who are non-bleeding or 90, and then following their clinical outcomes with the hypothesis that lower platelet transfusion threshold will be equally safe as the higher. Marianne Nellis”

An Outlook into The Future Blood Centers

Date: 3 April 2024

Speakers: Zheng Yinhong, James Bargh

Moderator: Cassie Yong

Available for: anyone (open access)

Aim of the webinar

Discuss the outlook of how the future blood centers look like in terms of task automation, workflow optimization, data data-supported decision making, as well as the driving force for this transformation. The speakers will share their current stage of digitalization of their blood centre and their future development plan in their digital transformation journey.

Level of education required

Fundamental Awareness (basic knowledge)

Target audience

Blood bankers, Scientists, transfusion practitioners, managers

This webinar was organised by Terumo BCT.

“Our center has led the cooperation of nearly 30 blood centers and established the largest platelet gene database in China. As we know, the transfusion of HLA matched platelets is critical for the patients with PTR by computer comparison. The waiting time for matched platelets has been significantly reduced to only three days. Zheng Yinhong”
