Lighting the Flame: inspiring the next generation of hematologists - spotlight on transfusion medicine

Education and collaboration are key drivers in inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. It was therefore a great privilege to participate as an invited speaker at Lighting the Flame, an educational event organized by the European Hematology Association (EHA) Young EHA Committee, dedicated to introducing medical students and young doctors to the fascinating fields of hematology and hemato-oncology.
Through the collaboration between young EHA and the ISBT Young Professionals Council, I was invited to bring the perspective of transfusion medicine to this initiative and highlight its essential role in supporting patients with hematological disorders. My session focused on the clinical use of blood components, covering the indications, contraindications, and appropriate dosing of blood products, as well as the recognition, management, and prevention of transfusion adverse reactions.
The interaction with participants was one of the most rewarding aspects of the event. Their curiosity, engagement, and thoughtful questions reflected a strong interest in understanding the broader aspects of hematology care. It was particularly encouraging to see young physicians recognizing that transfusion medicine is not simply about providing blood products, but about making evidence-based clinical decisions that directly influence patient outcomes.
Events such as Lighting the Flame provide an important platform for interdisciplinary education and demonstrate the value of connecting different areas of medicine from the earliest stages of professional development. The collaboration between EHA and ISBT represents a shared commitment to fostering knowledge exchange, mentorship, and the development of future leaders in hematology and transfusion medicine.
I would like to thank the Young EHA for the invitation and for creating an opportunity to showcase the contribution of transfusion medicine within the wider hematology community. Experiences like this reinforce the importance of collaboration between specialties and inspire us to continue building bridges that ultimately benefit the patients we serve.
