Founded in December 2001, the Mexican Association of Transfusion Medicine, C.A. (AMMTAC by its acronym in Spanish) brings together the most prominent professionals in the field of transfusion medicine in Mexico, promoting scientific dissemination, continuing education, the rational use of blood, safety and efficacy in processes related to blood and its components.

Throughout its history, AMMTAC has been instrumental in promoting and developing transfusion practice in the country. With 745 active members distributed throughout the country, the Association has established itself as the leading scientific and academic organization in transfusion medicine in Mexico, whose pillars are based on technical excellence, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.

Our mission is to promote the ongoing training and development of specialized personnel through diploma programs, conferences, consensus-building workshops, and publications that strengthen the scientific, technological, and ethical development of the sector.

Our vision is to establish ourselves as a leading national and international association, with a global presence in medical education, innovation in biotherapies, and the promotion of voluntary and altruistic blood donation.

In the scientific field, AMMTAC maintains active collaboration with international organizations such as the AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies), GCIAMT (Ibero-American Cooperative Group on Transfusion Medicine), and the ISBT (International Society of Blood Transfusion). These strategic alliances have strengthened different areas of research and development in hemovigilance, molecular immunohematology, therapeutic apheresis, and patient blood management (PBM) programs.

22nd AMMTAC National Meeting, held from September 24 to 27, 2025, in Mérida, Yucatán, brought together 1,181 attendees and 58 speakers from 12 countries. Over four days, 69 conferences were held, distributed across 21 symposia and 8 pre-congress workshops, focused on strengthening the technical and scientific competencies of professionals in the field.

The scientific program addressed different aspects such as advanced immunohematology, quality management in blood banks, hemovigilance, biotechnology, transplants, regenerative medicine, and clinical innovation and management strategies, reaffirming AMMTAC's commitment to academic excellence and the continuous improvement of transfusion medicine in Mexico.

Some of the most prominent international speakers who participated in the event included:

  • Lilian María de Castilho (Brasil) – AABB and ISBT Member
  • Celina Montemayor (Canadá/México) – AABB and ISBT Member
  • Eduardo Muñiz Díaz (España) – SETS, GCIAMT and ISBT Member
  • José Antonio Cancelas Pérez (EE. UU./España) – AABB President
  • Silvina Kuperman (Argentina) – GCIAMT and ISBT Member
  • Mickey Boon Chai Koh (Singapur/Reino Unido) – ISBT Regional Director
  • Susan T. Johnson (EE. UU.) – AABB and ISBT Member
  • Romi Alcaraz Paredes (Paraguay) –GCIAMT President
  • Oscar Walter Torres (Argentina) – GCIAMT and ISBT Member
  • José Eduardo Levi (Brasil) – ISBT Regional Director
  • Christine Bales (EE. UU.) – AABB and ISBT Member
  • Alexander Indrikovs (EE. UU.) – AABB Member

Within the framework of this major event, the first national meeting was realized to form a working group on rare phenotypes, in collaboration with the GCIAMT and representatives from Latin America. This event marked a historic milestone by laying the foundation for the consolidation of a national and Latin American transfusion network.

More than two decades after its creation, AMMTAC remains as an important pillar of transfusion medicine in Mexico, promoting professional development, applied research, public policy development for blood services, regulatory updates, and international cooperation.

With a strong network of experts and a long-standing commitment to scientific excellence, AMMTAC continues to raise national standards for transfusion safety, efficiency, and ethics.

22nd AMMTAC National Meeting reaffirmed this leadership by bringing together the global scientific community around the challenges and advances of contemporary transfusion medicine. Through integration of knowledge, innovation, and continuing education, AMMTAC envisions a future in which Mexico consolidates its position as a Latin American benchmark in transfusion medicine, biotechnology, and patient blood management.
