ISBT Barcelona 2024
We are excited to co-host our June congress in the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain, with the Spanish Society of Blood Transfusion. As well as all the amazing science, interactive learning and networking at the congress, you can experience everything Barcelona has to offer, including culture, architecture, cuisine, warm weather, parks, beaches, fun nights and much more!

Where is it
The congress venue (CCIB) itself was designed by the architect Josep Lluís Matro with emphasis on light, attracting many awards for its advanced technology. It also has green credentials with its Biosphere certification and many options for more sustainable events. All this, and views of the Mediterranean sea make it a truly unique, special venue!

Getting there

A glimpse into what to expect at ISBT Barcelona
What to expect
The congress starts on Sunday 23 with the ‘’Local Day’’ with a scientific programme prepared by the local organising committee covering topics of interest within Spain and delivered in Spanish. Members of the ISBT Working parties will be getting together for their business meetings that run over Sunday and Monday. There will also be social sciences workshop, open to all congress delegates. The Transfusion Practitioners (TPs) will be running a workshop on the role of the TP; one of many interactive workshops throughout the congress.
Monday is also the ISBT Academy Day with educational sessions for anyone learning for the first time, updating knowledge or looking for an accessible way to get into topic areas outside their own speciality.
The main scientific programme, including parallel sessions with dedicated streams that cover the complete transfusion chain from the donor to the patient, takes place from Tuesday to Thursday. Each session has a theme and begins with an invited speaker followed by oral presentations selected from high scoring abstract submissions.
Plenary sessions also feature of the programme throughout the congress days, each with three invited speakers with the themes; ideas changing transfusion medicine, implementation science and risks of an ageing donor population. As it is the international congress, there are two additional plenary award sessions with ground-breaking lectures by the Presidential Award recipient and Jean Julliard Prize winner – you can see here for more details about our award winners.

Social events
The opening ceremony will be held on Monday June 24 and includes welcome speeches, award presentations and leading to the exhibition welcome reception and opening of the trade exhibition will take place. This is a great opportunity to explore the exhibition hall, visit the exhibition booths and discover the latest developments in transfusion technology while meeting up with friends and colleagues and enjoying some local culinary treats.
The early risers will start their Wednesday with some exercise at the fun run and discover the city of Barcelona on a beautiful summer morning. Enter the run as an individual and meet new people, or as a team for a fun, bonding experience.
The congress party will be held on Wednesday evening at Can Magi, a beautiful traditional house built in 1878 as part of a wine farm with inside spaces, cellars and gardens - so plenty of room for everyone to dance, talk and enjoy the night!
