CSBT Highlights at ISBT Kuala Lumpur 2026
The Chinese Society of Blood Transfusion (CSBT) is a national non-profit industrial social organization voluntarily formed by institutions, enterprises, and related professionals in technology and management. As one of ISBT's long-term partners and with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISBT, let’s share the CSBT events during ISBT Kuala Lumpur held in June 2026.
From 20 to 24 June 2026, the CSBT members were very happy to join ISBT Kuala Lumpur congress. Jointly organized by ISBT and the Malaysian Blood Transfusion Society (MBTS), the congress brought together 2,606 delegates from 100 countries and regions, including 883 representatives from exhibiting companies. The scientific programme featured 55 scientific sessions, 11 workshops, 273 presentations and 850 poster presentations. A total of 90 companies participated in the exhibition.
During the congress, CSBT President Zhu Yongming, and Chen Limin, Vice Chair of the CSBT TTD Subcommittee and Chief Scientist at the Institute of Blood Transfusion, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, delivered an invited special presentation. Experts from a number of CSBT member institutions, including Shanghai Blood Center, Shandong Blood Center, Jiangsu Blood Center, Henan Red Cross Blood Center, Guangzhou Blood Center and Shenzhen Blood Center, gave oral presentations.
CSBT and ISBT Convene Annual Working Meeting
During the congress, CSBT and ISBT held their annual working meeting. Participants from CSBT included Zhu Yongming; CSBT Vice President Liu Jiaxin, former Director of the Institute of Blood Transfusion, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; CSBT Deputy Secretary-General Liu Qingning; CSBT Executive Council Member Xia Rong, Huashan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University; Liang Huaqin, Director of Guangzhou Blood Center; Ning Li, Chair of the CSBT Committee on Small and Medium-Sized Blood Establishments; Chen Limin, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; and Qiu Feng, CSBT Executive Council Member and General Manager of Weimei (Shanghai) Management Co., Ltd.
Participants from ISBT included ISBT President Lin Fung; Chief Executive Officer Jenny White; incoming Chief Executive Officer Karin van den Berg; Treasurer Martin Smid; Vice President Jill Storry; Secretary General Gwen Clarke; and Western Pacific Regional Director Ji Yanli.

They reviewed previous cooperation between CSBT and ISBT. CSBT and ISBT have maintained close communication and cooperation for many years. The two organizations signed a five-year cooperation agreement in 2019 and renewed the agreement in 2024. The agreement sets out collaborative initiatives in areas including professional training, conference organization and activities conducted by their respective branches and working groups. It also provides that the two organizations should hold at least one bilateral working meeting each year to review the implementation of the agreement. Finally, they discussed potential areas and projects for future collaboration.

At the invitation of the congress, CSBT President Zhu Yongming delivered a presentation entitled “Harmonizing Terminology in Blood Safety: Progress of a WHO Working Group.” The presentation introduced the work of the WHO Expert Advisory Group on Blood Regulation, Availability and Safety (AGBRAS), as well as the progress made by a WHO working group led by Zhu Yongming in harmonizing terminology in the field of blood transfusion. He invited ISBT members and experts from other relevant organizations to participate in this initiative.

CSBT Exhibits at the ISBT Congress CSBT also established a dedicated exhibition area at the congress. This marked the fourth time that CSBT had exhibited at an ISBT congress, following its participation in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2019; Cape Town, South Africa, in 2023; and the ISBT Regional Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in 2024.
