A workshop organized by Haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists Society of Nigeria (HBTSSN) and sponsored by International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT).
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists Society of Nigeria (HBTSSN) is an umbrella organization for haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists with the vision of promoting excellence in practice and delivery of laboratory haematology and Blood Transfusion Services in Nigeria. One of the objectives of this society among others is international collaborations and networking in research and development. To achieve this objective, the HBTSSN applied for affiliate membership with International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and by September 2019, HBTSSN became an affiliate member of ISBT. After two successful regional workshops in Ibadan and Abuja respectively, the HBTSSN hosted her first international congress in Port Harcourt, Nigeria from the 16th -20th March, 2020 and the 2nd International edition in 2022 at Abuja, Nigeria. The HBTSSN 2024 is the 3rd Biennial conference of the society with a 2-day workshop on HAEMOSTASIS AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION: THE MEETING POINT and the second time the HBTSSN has benefited from the ISBT Academy support programme. We are grateful to ISBT for granting us Academy support and sponsorship which enable us to host the workshop seamlessly.

Objectives 2 - 4 were achieved through hands-on workshop held on the 18th April, 2024 from 8.00 am to 4.00pm. There were two stations mounted with the equipments (Coagulometers) and the resource persons from sysmex were fully on ground and in charge. Each station accommodated 5 participants and each round lasted for 20 minutes. This continued in groups of 10 for twenty minutes each until all the participants had their turns. In all sixty nine (69) registered members participated out of which eighteen(18) were students.
The hands-on sessions was followed by question and answer sessions where experts, early career scientists and students interacted. On this platform, the students were able to express themselves on the new knowledge they have acquired while the early career scientists shared their experiences and challenges in their various out posts. The senior colleagues and experts answered their questions with explanations.
On the strength of the sponsorship given by ISBT through the ISBT Academy, the HBTSSN advertised for travel awards to encourage students and early career scientists to attend the conference. This is the first time in Nigeria such travel awards is being instituted and we are most grateful to ISBT. Five students and two early career scientists qualified and passed the prescribed interview and were selected and given the awards. The awardees were given award plaques bearing ISBT/HBTSSN Logos, their conference registration fees refunded and a cash award of fifty thousand naira (N50,000.00) given to each awardee to cover their travel exprenses.
The workshop was very insightful, educative, impactful and has fulfilled its desired objectives, judging from the participants’ feedback. The HBTSSN is grateful to ISBT management for the 2024 sponsorship which has provided a seamless workshop and built capacity for her members. We are looking forward to another exciting moments in April 2026.
